An Ordered Probit Model Analysis of Transaction costs and Market Participation by Sweet Potato Farmers in South Eastern Nigeria. AgEcon
Ohajianya, D.O.; Ugochukwu, Albert I..
This study determined the factors (related to fixed and variable transaction costs) influencing the decision to participate in sweet potato markets by a random sample of 320 small holder farmers in south eastern Nigeria. Data were collected with structured and validated questionnaire, and analyzed using the ordered probit analysis procedure. Participation decisions revealed that marketing experience, farm size, membership of cooperatives/social organizations, extension contact, farming experience and road conditions to the nearest town had positive relationship with decision to be autarkic other than buyer and to be seller other than autarkic, and were significant at 1% level of probability. The coefficient of age, household size, and output were also...

Analysis of genetic and epigenetic variation in in vitro propagated potato somatic hybrid by AFLP and MSAP marker Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Tiwari,Jagesh Kumar; Saurabh,Shaumaya; Chandel,Poonam; Singh,Bir Pal; Bhardwaj,Vinay.
Background: Genetic and epigenetic changes (DNA methylation) were examined in the tissue-culture propagated interspecific potato somatic hybrids between dihaploid Solanum tuberosum and S. pinnatisectum. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) were applied to detect the genetic and epigenetic changes, respectively in the somatic hybrids mother plants (1st cycle) and their regenerants (30th cycles sub-cultured). Results: To detect genetic changes, eight AFLP primer combinations yielded a total of 329 scorable bands of which 49 bands were polymorphic in both mother plants and regenerants. None of the scorable bands were observed in term of loss of original band of mother plant or gain of novel band...

Assessment of some physical properties of dried potatoes CIGR Journal
Hafezi, Negar; Sheikhdavoodi, Mohammad Javad; Sajadiye, Seyed Majid.
The effect of drying behaviour on the drying rate and quality characteristics of potato slices in a vacuum-infrared drying system was studied. In this research, the effect of the infrared radiation powers (100, 150, and 200 W) and vacuum levels (20, 80, 140 mmHg and atmosphere pressure) at different slice thickness (1, 2 and 3 mm) on drying rate and shrinkage percentage and rehydration capacity were investigated.  It was concluded that infrared radiation power amount has a significant effect on processing time and drying rate. With increasing radiation power, drying time is reduced and consequently drying rate is increased. The drying rate curve of potato slices at initial drying time is in the ascending phase because of surface moisture evaporation and...

Characterization of Bacillus isolates of potato rhizosphere from andean soils of Peru and their potential PGPR characteristics BJM
Calvo,Pamela; Ormeño-Orrillo,Ernesto; Martínez-Romero,Esperanza; Zúñiga,Doris.
Bacillus spp. are well known rhizosphere residents of many crops and usually show plant growth promoting (PGP) activities that include biocontrol capacity against some phytopatogenic fungi. Potato crops in the Andean Highlands of Peru face many nutritional and phytophatogenic problems that have a significant impact on production. In this context is important to investigate the natural presence of these microorganisms in the potato rhizosphere and propose a selective screening to find promising PGP strains. In this study, sixty three Bacillus strains isolated from the rhizosphere of native potato varieties growing in the Andean highlands of Peru were screened for in vitro antagonism against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium solani. A high prevalence (68%) of...

Tomé,Lívia Gracielle Oliveira; Silva,Adriano Bortolotti da; Pinto,Cesar Augusto Brasil Pereira; Davide,Lisete Chamma; Pereira,Dalvana Sousa; Carvalho,Carlos Roberto de.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the colchicine and oryzalin anti-mitotic substances on the induction of tetraploid plants and foliar anatomy of two diploids clones of Solanum commersonii ssp. Nodal segments of Solanum commersonii subsp. commersonii Dun. and Solanum commersonii subsp. malmeanum Bitt. were treated with colchicine (3.5, 5.0, and 6.5mM; 72h) or oryzalin (10, 30, and 50µM; 24h). After the treatment with anti-mitotic substances, nodal segments were inoculated in the MS culture medium and cultivated in vitro (60 days). After in vitro cultivation, the plants were transferred to vases with the substrate Plantmax(r) and kept in the greenhouse (45 days). Plant ploidy level was assessed by flow cytometry and leaf...

Comparison of fall and spring bedding for furrow irrigated potatoes following fall moldboard or chisel plowing NWISRL
Shock, C.; Stieber, T.; Eldredge, E.; Sojka, R.; Kennedy-Ketcheson, E..
The decision to fall or spring bed potatoes is often dictated by weather and processor contract agreements. Although there are advantages to both fall an( spring bedding, soil conditions are often wet in the spring in Malheur County, Oregon. Spring bedding of wet soils leads to soil compaction and decreased water infiltration. The primary objective of the study was to determine the effects of fall or spring bedding on tuber yields and quality under furrow irrigation. Determining the most effective method of fall potato ground preparation was the second objective of the trial. Land for potato production is normally moldboard plowed in the fall. Chisel plowing may provide better placement of residues in bedded ground and thus promote higher...

Control of potato early blight with triazole fungicide using preventive and curative spraying, or a forecasting system Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mantecón,Jorge D.
During the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons, two field trials were conducted at the INTA Balcarce Experimental Station (Argentina) to study the control of potato early blight (Alternaria solani). Uncut virus-free seed tubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum) cv. Pampeana PNTA that were susceptible to early blight and resistant to late blight were machine planted in 0.20-m intervals in rows spaced 0.8 mapart. Each plot consisted of 4 rows that were 5 meters long. Difenoconazole (Bogard 25EC) was sprayed weekly at a rate of 0.25 L· ha-1 or bi-weekly at a rate of 0.50 L· ha-1 on a preventive program and on a curative program. The same treatments and rates were also applied when the forecast model (Specware 6.02) reached 300 P-Days after emergence, and applications...
